No one wants their new employees to fail. When you invest time and money to find the right person for your business, the last thing you want to do is go through the hiring process all over again.

We spotted a great video covering this subject from New York’s ‘leading executive recruiter and employment agency’, Systems Personnel.

Skills vs. Personality fit

If you’re hiring for a position you want to make sure that the person you bring in, can do the work that needs to be done. That’s a given.

But not having the required skills is rarely the reason for new hire failures.

“Our clients are telling us that the top two reasons new employees don’t work out are: Number 1 – Person didn’t fit in. Number 2 – Person didn’t produce. In my estimation “Number 2” has a lot to do with “Number 1.” If you don’t fit in you rarely produce.

Here is a cold hard fact. We hire people for what they know, and fire them for who they are.”

Jim makes a great point here. The right person for the role technically, is not always the best person for the job.

Hiring failures can be prevented by assessing personality fit.

How to assess cultural fit

Identify your company values and use the interviews to determine which candidates share those characteristics. You should adjust your questioning to include more personality-led conversations. Ask about how they would approach certain difficult situations, what they consider is their outstanding quality, and who they look to as a role model.

If the person fits in, he is more highly engaged in his work and strives to do his best. A person who fits in is a person who adapts and delivers value in the long run. Isn’t that what all hiring managers are looking for?

The work you put in to evaluate a candidate’s cultural fit will reward you with a new hire that is more likely to gel with the existing team and provide a positive performance for the business. All part of getting it right the first time.

At Jumar, we use psychometric tools to analyse a candidate’s professional behaviour. The reporting gives a detailed understanding of how this person would work within your team, a layer of science that is difficult to obtain from a standard face-to-face interview.
